KOMPIAM REGION

Inapini

Inapini, like Aiamane, traces its origins to Saka Pembe, the founding father of most of the tribes in the Saka valley. Inapini was originally part of the Waimini Inapakini clan in the Saka that migrated to the Kompiam area after an internal Waimini fight over a bird trap in a swamp in the seventh generation or earlier.

Even though we interviewed many Inapini and Waimini, we could get no details of the fight or migration nor any other details of Inapini history. As with Aiamane, the reason for Inapini’s leaving the Saka is a minor one, and the underlying reason may have been that other Waimini clans wanted their land or that they interfered with the plans of other clans in the growing trade and pig exchange.

Whatever the underlying reason for the fight, Inapini migrated to the area south of Kompiam around Winikosa, Yaemanda and Okauanda (Laiagama). Like other tribes in the region, they later maintained ties with their area of origin through trade and the Yae Tee exchange cycle.

We were unable to get consistent results of Inapini clans. Some said that Milya at Lembene is also a clan of Inapini and others that Angini, Akitane and Elyabisane were sub-clans, not clans.
